Bucks Drop High-Scoring Season Opener

The Motlow Bucks got a pair of goals from Kristen Gasaway and one each from Alexis McMath and Alysa Benton but it wasn't enough to hold off powerful Polk State College as the Bucks dropped a 6-4 decision in their opening game of the 2022 women's soccer season.

Motlow will open its home schedule when it hosts the Wabash Valley College Warriors from Mt. Carmel, Illinois, at Siegel Park in Murfreesboro on Friday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m.

McMath, a freshman from Florida, got the scoring started for Motlow with a header goal at the 11:52 mark on a corner kick from Madisen Hodges. Polk State responded with a goal at 17:59 to tie the score at 1-1.

Gasaway, Motlow's leading scorer from last season, made a terrific move on Polk's goalkeeper and scored at 21:15 to give Motlow a 2-1 lead. Polk State again didn't use much time before scoring a goal at 25:50 to tie the game again at 2-2.

Polk State added a goal on a penalty kick at the 41:45 mark and went into halftime with a 3-2 lead. The Eagles, based in Winter Haven, Florida, added their third consecutive goal at the 61:29 mark to increase their lead to 4-2.

The Bucks weren't finished though. They continued to put pressure on the Polk State defense with Gasaway adding her second goal at 65:01 with an assist from Alysa Benton to pull Motlow within one at 4-3. The powerful shot again left Polk's goaltender without a chance for the save.

The Eagles then added consective goals at 79:46 and 81:01 to extend their lead to 6-3. The Bucks kept the pressure on with Benton scoring on a free kick to pull within 6-4 at 83:16. Motlow couldn't add to their offensive output though as the Eagles closed out the contest.
